چکیده

Their capability to penetrate large depths of material renders high-energy atmospheric muons a unique probe for geophysical explorations. Provided the topography of the target is known, the measurement of the attenuation of the muon flux permits the cartography of matter density distributions revealing spatial and possibly also temporal variations in extended geological structures. A collaboration between volcanologists, astroparticleand particle physicists, TOMUVOL, was formed in 2009 to study tomographic muon imaging of volcanoes with high-resolution tracking detectors. By exploiting Glass Resistive Plate Chambers (GRPCs) with a semidigital readout developped for ILC hadronic calorimetry within the CALICE collaboration, TOMUVOL aims to improve the understanding of volcanic processes and may finally contribute to reducing volcanic hazards. In 2011, TOMUVOL operated a muon telescope with three parallel detection planes at the flank of the Puy de Dôme, an inactive volcanic dome situated in the Massif Central (southcentral France). This contribution presents preparatory work towards muon tomography as well as flux measurements obtained after the first months of data taking.

Subsurface modeling of mud volcanoes, using density model and analysis of seismic velocity

Detection of subsurface structures by means of gravity method can be used to determine mass distribution and density contrast of rock units. This distribution could be detected by different geophysical methods, especially gravity method. However, gravity techniques have some drawbacks and can't be always successful in distinguishing subsurface structures. Performance of the gravity technique co...

Monitoring temporal opacity fluctuations of large structures with muon radiography: a calibration experiment using a water tower

Usage of secondary cosmic muons to image the geological structures density distribution significantly developed during the past ten years. Recent applications demonstrate the method interest to monitor magma ascent and volcanic gas movements inside volcanoes. Muon radiography could be used to monitor density variations in aquifers and the critical zone in the near surface. However, the time res...

Study of the Effects of Atmospheric Pressure in the Time Series of Muon Detector Using the Method of Spectral Analysis

This paper presented a study of the effects of atmospheric pressure in the time series of muon detector using the method of spectral analysis of iterative regression. In which it observed that the periods of 4.8, 5.7, 7.0, 8.7, 10.7, 14.1, 16.2, 21.0, 31.2 and 356.7 days present in the amplitude spectrum of atmospheric pressure are also present in the amplitude spectra of muons data. Also it ob...

Retrieval of sulfur dioxide from a ground-based thermal infrared imaging camera

Recent advances in uncooled detector technology now offer the possibility of using relatively inexpensive thermal (7 to 14 μm) imaging devices as tools for studying and quantifying the behaviour of hazardous gases and particulates in atmospheric plumes. An experimental fast-sampling (60 Hz) ground-based uncooled thermal imager (Cyclops), operating with four spectral channels at central waveleng...

Calculation of atmospheric muons from cosmic gamma rays

The production of muons in atmospheric showers initiated by gamma rays with energies below 10 TeV is calculated using the Monte Carlo code FLUKA. The simulations as well as various general properties of the muons reaching sea level and of their ancestors in the cascade are discussed.
